Each year, the Spirit of Sandra $5,000 scholars stage a fundraising event for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. Renelle Humphreys held a fun ‘spiel at the Granite Curling Club in Saskatoon. Participants played two 2-end games and had a Chinese food dinner. There were raffles, 50/50, and silent auction. Everyone had a great time and at the end of the night Renelle netted over $2,000 for the Foundation. At the end of the season, the 6 scholars will get together and as a group decide where the funds raised plus a match from the Foundation of up to $10,000 will be donated and what life-saving equipment will be purchased for that hospital’s newborn intensive care unit. This process will be facilitated by world champions Jon Mead and Cathy Overton Clapham, who mentor the scholars year round. All of us at the Foundation are extremely proud of Renelle and the other scholars – Veronica Smith, Katherine Doerksen, Jestyn Murphy, Kristen Streifel; who are all exemplary citizens, enthusiastic volunteers, extremely talented athletes and outstanding students. Together they are helping ensure that Sandra’s legacy lives on and that babies born in Canada have a chance to grow up and be a champion.
