Grant History

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation’s initial mission was to “help families with seriously ill children” which was reflected in our early giving to national charities. Our mission was refined as the Foundation expanded its fundraising efforts to include a national Telethon broadcast annually from the Scotties Tournament of Hearts by TSN. TSN remains an incredible supporter today and are an integral part of the Foundation’s ongoing success. We are proud to recognize TSN commentator, Vic Rauter, and producer, Scott Higgins, as Legacy Champions for their on-going personal support.

During the early years, we became aware of a growing need for support of premature and critically ill newborns that begin their lives in incubators in Newborn Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in hospitals across Canada. We observed the same will to live and fight for life in these miracle babies that Sandra showed as she faced the biggest battle of her life and one she lost in March 2000. Sandra’s love of family and her two daughters who were just 6 months and 2 years old at the time of her death continues to drive our fundraising efforts and is the reason that we believe that “All Champions Start Small”.

Our Foundation is incredibly proud to have given over $2.8 million dollars to help newborns grow up and realize their dreams. The memory of Sandra Schmirler lives in our hearts and the hearts of anyone who met this outstanding woman. Her legacy lives on in the Sandra Schmirler Foundation and the thousands of babies and their families that have benefited from life-saving equipment purchased with funds donated in Sandra’s name.
